The housing estates of Drumchapel were built between 1952 and 1953. They were built to rid Glasgow of the 'slum' stigma that the area held worldwide - for many early residents the flats were their first experience of an inside WC and private bath - but far from being the 'miracle cure' that everyone hoped, all they did was become the 'slums of the 60s'.

Now it is the 21st Century and almost 50 years later these estates are being raised to the ground and a new Drumchapel is rising like a Phoenix from the ashes with a mixture of modern apartments and family homes for rental and private purchase.

There is a renewed feeling of community in Drumchapel and at the heart of that community in this area is the Waverley Neighbourhood Centre.

Originally built as flats, the Centre has had several incarnations, including annexe to Waverley Secondary School and Summerhill Primary School in the 1950s.

The Waverley Neighbourhood Centre, in its current form, was officially opened by
Cllr J Jennings, then Convenor of Strathclyde Regional Council, on 2nd September 1989.
